What is Positive Material Identification (PMI)
Positive Material Identification (PMI) is a fast and non-destructive testing (NDT) method for verifying the chemical composition of metals and alloys. PMI can be used to verify that supplied materials conform to the proper standards and specifications.
The need for PMI testing in the Oil and Gas and Refining Industries came to light as early as 1992 when OSHA determined it was necessary to enforce PSM or Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (HHC)to help avoid accidents, injuries and death.
Material Verification Challenges
- Materials look alike - Stainless Steel vs. Nickel vs. Chrome not easily distinguished by sight
- Human error - Materials are handled dozens of times at the producer’s plant, in shipping, at the consumer plant - mix ups are inevitable
- A few possible producer errors – mislabeled – for example, SS – 304 labeled as Inco 600
PMI (Positive Material Identification) testing is the analysis of materials to determine the chemical composition of a metal or alloy at particular (usually multiple) steps of alloy manufacturing or in-process alloy installation. Knowing the exact composition and grade of an alloy enables suppliers, plant workers, and other responsible parties in the chain of custody of components to match alloy specifications that are chosen for their specific properties such as heat resistance, corrosion resistance, durability.
Having the right alloy in the right place is essential in places like petroleum refineries and chemical plants, because the right alloy with the right properties is often all that stands between a safe, efficient operation and lost time and revenue
PMI allows a user to verify that the alloy used is as specified, check if the grade is as expected. This is of central importance to ensuring resistance to heat and corrosion, weld-ability, and durability to ensure safe practices
How PMI performed
- Calibrate the PMI machine
- Place safely as it has radiation, on the metal
- Trigger the machine to analyze composition
- Analyses can be read on the screen
- Match with approved or standards
