what are Hoses
Hoses are typically flexible, made of nylon, rubbers, and other non-metal-based materials, and are not used for pipeline applications. The most common situations where you see hoses applications include:
- Air
- Water
- Hydraulic fluids
- Chemicals
Hoses are used to carry fluids through air or fluid environments, and they are typically used with clamps, spigots, flanges, and nozzles to control fluid flow. Specific applications include the following: A garden hose is used to water plants in a garden or lawn, or to convey water to a sprinkler for the same purpose.
Hoses are reinforced for involving high pressure whereas pipes are not reinforced. Hoses are rigid kind of tubes whereas pipes are more flexible than hoses. This difference in flexibility arises due to their different composition of constituent materials
Types of Hose
Air Hose
Air hoses can come in lightweight and
flexible hoses or heavy-duty, reinforced hoses for the full range of industrial
and construction applications. A rubber hose
will be made of natural latex
(rubber) or synthetic rubber. Hoses made of other materials such as
plastic, vinyl, silicone, or other specialized materials may be used for
similar applications.
Chemical Hose
Chemical hoses are equipped for the transfer of solvents, chemicals, and acids. Safety is a consideration with a Chemical Hose. Manufacturers will tout the various ways they reinforce the hose for chemical and/or temperature resistance. Steal hoses are made by, inner tube is made of a stainless steel sheet that has been rolled into a tube and seam welded. Upon completion of the tube, corrugations are evenly formed along the entire length, these convolutions provide the hose with its flexibility.
Hydraulic Hose
Hydraulic Hose are typically used in materials
handling, Oil and gas , marine, automobiles , construction, and agriculture
applications. Often made of rubber with reinforced neoprene covers.
Material Handling Hose
Material handling hoses come in a variety of materials including rubber, PVC, and polyurethane, and can be used for a wide range of applications. Clear material hoses allow for visual confirmation of material flow.
Steam Hose
Designed for use in refineries, chemical plants,
and shipyards, these hoses convey steam in extreme conditions. Flexible Braided
Hose that are typically consists of multiple layers of metallic strands/ wires
spirally wound or otherwise woven to form the tubular shape. The tubular shaped
metallic strands/ wires are covered internally as well as externally with
rubber or other suitable and chemically compatible elastomeric substance.
When it comes to manufacturing, rubber hoses can be produced in several methods, including extrusion, spiral wrapping, calendaring, hand layup and molding. In general, small diameter hoses are primarily produced through extrusion, while larger diameter rubber hoses are typically created through spiral wrapping.
Testing of Hoses
The inspection covers the external visual inspection, witnessing of pressure test and electrical continuity test. Hoses to be visually inspected for the dimensions and its materials specifications to be matching with the datasheet (positive materiel identification ) test shall be done to verify hose manufactured with specified alloy materials
In Hydro testing fill up the hose with a medium, such as water, in some cases air as recommended and take it to a pre-specified test pressure and hold it for a period of time.
During this pressure phase the hose is monitored and inspected to make sure the hose can withstand the pressure, the pressure test shall be 1.3 times the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP). It is recommended that, before depressurizing the hose, reduce the pressure to 1/3rd of the test pressure and visually inspect the hose assembly for any defect or weeping.
